From playing as kids in kindergarten to playing records in clubs, being a lifelong duo has made it easy for Roderick Merkx and Tjeerd Wijffels to discover their shared passion for music, inevitably developing into Avos. Locally it’s nights at Studio 80, Air and Chicago Social Club that fall under their spell, whilst Berlin hotspots like Club Der Visionaere, Dora Brilliant in Frankfurt and Down Under in Belgium also came calling in the recent past.
“Our goal is to create subtle yet powerful sounds with a sense of nostalgia but also modern aspects to it,” say the pair who cite early hip hop and pioneering ‘90s electronica as some of their main influences. It is these influences that characterise the debut solo material from Avos, due for release later this year on their own label. Before now they have collaborated with Einetter, who is also their partner in said label, LowMoneyMusicLove, alongside Moses Mawila.
The label has excelled right from the start, with an excellent first release from dub techno king Steve O' Sullivan (aka Bluetrain) and some great parties under the same banner featuring fast rising artists Nicolas Lutz and Francesco Del Garda in both Frankfurt and Amsterdam respectively. With plans for more label parties in other destinations around Europe always taking shape, Avos are currently building themselves a new basement studio that is sure to be the place of much magical musical invention in the coming years.
